RACIAL ATTACK IN GETTYSBURG COLLEGE SWIM TEAM
Gettysburg, PA - A deeply troubling incident has rocked the Gettysburg College community after a Black student and member of the college’s swim team was reportedly subjected to a violent and racially motivated attack on campus. On September 6, 2024, the victim, the only swimmer of color on the team, was allegedly assaulted by a fellow teammate who used box cutters to carve a racial slur into his chest.
The victim’s family, describing the act as a “hate crime,” said their son was attacked in an act of extreme racial hatred. The student’s chest was etched with the n-word, a vile reminder of the racism that still plagues American society. They have voiced their deep concern for the safety and well-being of students of color at Gettysburg College and have urged the institution to take swift and decisive action in response to the incident.
Gettysburg College has responded to the event by confirming that the individual responsible for the attack is no longer enrolled as a student at the college. However, the family of the victim remains apprehensive, stating that the issue goes beyond individual punishment and reflects a broader need for systemic change to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
