Minneapolis Man Survives Racially Motivated Shooting After Years of Police Inaction
October 2024, Minneapolis, MN — Davis Moturi, a Minneapolis resident, is recovering after a harrowing racially motivated attack in which he was shot in the neck by his neighbor, John Sawchak. The assault left Moturi with severe injuries, including a fractured spine, broken ribs, and a concussion. Authorities have confirmed that the shooting was the culmination of years of racial harassment by Sawchak.
Moturi, a Black man, had filed at least 20 harassment complaints with the Minneapolis Police Department over the years, detailing a pattern of abuse that included verbal slurs, threats, and intimidation. Despite these warnings, no substantial action was taken to protect him. In a statement following the incident, Police Chief Angela Rodriguez admitted the department’s failure, stating that the police did not do enough to address the repeated threats against Mr. Moturi.
