Springfield, IL, July 6, 2024 – In a tragic incident that has shocked the Springfield community, Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman, was fatally shot by a deputy sheriff responding to her 911 call about a suspected intruder. According to official reports, Massey called 911 after suspecting an intruder in her residence. Deputy Sheriffs were dispatched to her home, where they encountered Massey holding a pot of hot water.
